A bike network for all ages and ability

Our vision for the Lane Cove bike network is to provide a safe, comfortable and attractive network that caters to people of all ages and ability. Providing a well-built bike network can support healthier and more sustainable travel choices, reduce traffic, free up parking, support local businesses, and make our streets quieter and more attractive places to live.

We expect our bike network to be;

  • Connected - providing continuous connections on a grid-like network with access to essential destinations like schools, shops, parks and public transport. Connections should be supported with ample bike parking in safe and attractive locations

  • Safe - providing separation from traffic, priority at intersections, and separation from pedestrians in busy locations

  • Comfortable - providing a smooth riding surface, shaded by trees, avoiding steep terrain, continuity at intersections, and places to stop and rest

  • Legible - providing an easy network to navigate, following roads and streets that are familiar and well known, easy to identify with ubiquitous pavement markings and clear wayfinding signage.

We understand it is not possible, or even desirable, to have a bike path on every road and street. This means prioritising places that have the highest potential conflict with traffic and pedestrians, and prioritising routes that connect people with essential destinations. The bike network should be complemented by a network of quiet residential streets that provide everyone in Lane Cove with easy access to the network and a viable alternative to driving.
